THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO THE SEVEN DWARFS

San Francisco Bay Press, 2010

ISBN Number: 978-0-9828295-9-2

Let the seven dwarfs tell the story of Snow White.  “Miners by trade, [they] determine to delve down below the hardened surface of the story” and discover why the mirror spoke, how the queen tried to be the fairest of the fair and what was Snow White’s reaction to meeting the dwarfs.  Follow Snow White’s years at the cottage of the seven dwarfs as she grows from a willowy girl into a young woman with dreams of rescue and romance.  You’ll meet other characters back at the castle: her distant father, scheming queen, the hunter, a cook and the scapegoated scullery maid.  Of course, there’s the poisoned apple, rescuing prince and, finally, the red-hot iron shoes forced on the wicked stepmother at Snow White’s wedding.  Like all folktales, this is “a lone story full of foolish urgencies.”

A WILDERNESS OF RICHES: VOICES OF THE VIRGINIA COLONY

ScriptWorks Press, 2008

ISBN Number: 978-0-9785837-4-0

History meets poetry in Lenny Lianne’s engaging and affable work of first-person narratives about the first permanent English settlement in the New World.  With carefully-documented details - local flora and fauna, settler’s occupations and treatment of indentured servants - she gives voice to the new settlers who speak of their aspirations as well as of the harsh realities they encounter.  An adult Pocahontas, the Indian princess kidnapped and turned into a Christian Englishwoman, also tells her story as do potential brides shipped to Virginia who disclose their ambitions to reinvent themselves in the New World and their faith in the future.  In the end, there’s a reluctant recognition that “this land cedes its secrets in it’s own time and style.”
